While not as legendary as Pavie's 2003, 2001, 2000, 1999, or 1998, the 2002 is one of the top wines of the vintage. Its deep plum/ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of fruitcake, cranberries, cherry liqueur, crushed rocks, and subtle oak. Savory, full-bodied, remarkably concentrated, layered, and forward for a Pavie, it should be accessible in 3-4 years, and will evolve effortlessly for two decades.

Dark color with complex aromas of blackberries, flowers and mace with undertones of nutmeg. Full-bodied, with a solid core of velvety tannins and ripe fruit. Goes on and on.

($150; bottled in July of 2004) Ruby-red. Aromas of black raspberry, tobacco, minerals and mocha. Suave, silky, lush and round; quite full but with lovely inner-mouth energy and aromatic character. Seamless, deep flavors of redcurrant, fruitcake and minerals. Finishes with excellent mounting persistence, the dusty, fine tannins buried in fruit. A terrific effort for the vintage, and likely to age gracefully over the next decade or two.

Truly amazing and already accessible!!! Not an overly massive, dense full bodied wine, rather this bottle is wonderfully concentrated and delicate. Complex aromas of leather, cedar, sweet plum, "Juicy Fresh," cigar, smoke, blue berry, and dark cherry with hints of vegetables. Keeps evolving in the decanter. Lush and silky on the palate followed by delicately lingering finish with lively acidity. Very well balanced. I sensed the similar DNA of wine maker Gerard Perse between this beauty and his less renowned terroir Monbousquet.

About This Producer

Chateau Pavie, the largest St.Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classe (Class B), is located on an old peach orchard, known as pavies. Vines have been cultivated at Pavie since the 4th century, making it one of the two oldest estates in St. Emilion. The chateau produces about 15,000 cases per year made from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines have an average age of 45 years and grow on clay, limestone and sand soils. Chateau La Gaffeliere and Chateau Pavie-Decesse border Pavie's vineyards. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrel and then ages in new oak. The wine's style is elegant with good depth of fruit on the palate. In recent years, Pavie has become richer and more concentrated. Chateau Pavie also produces a Bordeaux AC rose called La Rosee de Pavie.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
