Unfortunately there is only one new release from Dom Perignon on the market, but what a wine it is! The 2002 Brut Rose explodes from the glass with endless layers of huge, voluptuous fruit, A big, full-bodied wine, the 2002 is probably the most overly vinous, intense Rose ever made by long-time Chef de Caves Richard Geoffroy. Layers of cool, insistent minerality balance the fruit beautifully on the crystalline, vivid finish. The 2002 will be nearly impossible to resist young, but take my word for it; the wine is extremely closed right now.

What can I say about the 2002 Dom Perignon Rose from magnum? Not much, except readers lucky enough to find bottles should not hesitate to snap them up. From magnum, the 2002 Rose is naturally quite tightly wound, but it will be spectacular in a few years, once it starts to open up a bit. Today, the exuberance of the wine from bottle is nowhere to be found, so opening a magnum is going to be a very costly experiment at this stage. I am reminded of a tasting I did a few years ago with friends where we opened the 1996 Rose from bottle, magnum and double magnum side by side. The bottle was the best wine right out the gate, while the double magnum was totally impenetrable, but after 4-5 hours the big bottle was interplanetary. Patience, patience, patience. (Magnum)

About This Producer

Dating back to 1743, Moet & Chandon is the largest and most recognized champagne brand and producer in the world. Dom Perignon, its most famous label, took its name from the Benedictine monk whom legend claims was the first to produce the sparkling beverage we know as champagne. The company was founded by Dutchman Claude Moet, who originally shipped wine to Paris to supply the royal court's growing desire for sparkling wine. The company introduced the concept of vintage champagne in the 1840s and began their popular brand "Brut Imperial" in the 1860s. Today Moet & Chandon is a segment of the international luxury goods brand "LVMH," after merging with Hennessy Cognac in 1971 and Louis Vuitton in 1987. Moet & Chandon also fathered the sparkling wine venture Domaine Chandon in the Napa Valley.

Wine Varietal: Champagne Blend

Three major varieties are used in a Champagne Blend: Chardonnay, which provides a smooth, creamy texture and Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, which provide depth and backbone. Most Champagne is non-vintage (NV), produced with grapes from several different vintages. Vintage Champagnes are made in exceptional years and must contain 80% grapes from that year. Champagne, France is the only region permitted to put "Champagne" on the label.

Blanc de Blancs: Meaning "white of white," blanc de blancs Champagne is 100% Chardonnay.

Blanc de Noirs: Meaning "white of red," is 100% Pinot Noir or a Pinot Noir/Pinot Meunier blend.

Rose Champagne: A small amount of still red wine is added during the blending process, creating a rose hue.
