Wine Spectator | Rating: 91

Bold and rich, but restrained. Tightly wound now, but manages to push a load of dense blackberry and currant flavors across the palate. Framed by a judicious use of vanilla-laced oak. Tannins are firm yet integrated. Give this youngster time, either by decanting or cellaring. 350 cases made.

($190; bottled in May of 2004) Bright ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of blackberry, bitter chocolate and minerals, with a medicinal aspect and a hint of tarry oak. Juicy, firm-edged flavors of black fruits, minerals, licorice, mint and tarry oak; reminded me of a young Rauzan-Segla. Finishes with excellent length, even if the tannins are a bit tougher and less sweet than those of the 2003.

This dense ruby/purple-colored 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits classic aromas of loamy soil, black currants, and cherries along with hints of new saddle leather, spice, dried herbs, and new wood. With medium body and elegant flavors, this still firm, tannic 2002 should be at its finest between 2007-2014.

Sumptious, with notes of wet tobacco, briar, eucaliptus and cherry. Soft sweet tannins and m+ acid make for a long finish of minerals and red/purple fruit

About This Producer

In 1976, former stockbroker Dick Grace, along with his wife Ann and their children began growing Cabernet Sauvignon from their eponymous vineyard in St. Helena initially just as a hobby. With their first harvest sold to Caymus and subsequently bottled as one of the first single vineyard designated wines in Napa, they embarked upon the path to becoming one of America's wine legends. Besides maintaining the high reputation of their own vineyard and wines, the Graces have contributed to the development of many others, formerly employing Heidi Barrett, and providing budwood for Hartwell Estate, Vineyard 29, and Blank Family Vineyards. With limited production of and unrelenting demand for their wines, they also pioneered the mailing list/waiting list sales model prevalent among many cult cab producers today.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
