The black/purple-colored 2002 Syrah exhibits tremendous ripeness along with scents of blackberries, charcoal, and white flowers, Made in a full-bodied, opulent style, I would opt for drinking it during its first 7-10 years of life.

(includes 4% viognier) Good medium ruby. Black raspberry, roasted meat and gunflint on the nose. Sweet, fat and fine-grained, with smoked meat, mineral and saline notes. Finishes with broad, sweet tannins and mouthcoating fruit. Lacks only the complexity for an even higher score.

A deep purple color tinged red with thin quite pigmented legs. Strong aromas of candied cherry and plum, chocolate, sweet earth, and espresso with watermelon, honeysuckle, and clay overtones. Thick and rich with plush tannin and loads of sweet fruit. Acidity is on the low side of sufficient but frankly I wish it were higher. Oily textured. Really fine length with plenty of smooth, opulent fruit hanging on until the end. Tannin however surprises by perking up at the end. Winemaker Francoise Peschon destemmed her fruit prior to whole-berry fermenting it using wild yeasts. A blend of 96% Syrah and 4% Viognier that was raised in French oak (50% new) for 22 months prior to bottling.

Opulent with nice balance and moderate finish. A bit tart.

About This Producer

The mission statement reads, in part, "To produce organically grown fruit and with this fruit make a singular wine of the highest caliber and distinction." By all accounts, Bart and Daphne Araujo are succeeding magnificently. The flagship wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon from their own Eisele Vineyards, is hailed by critics and desired by consumers in every vintage. Though first planted to Zinfandel and Riesling in the 1880s, the Eisele Vineyard has been the home of world class Cabernet since 1964. The low-yielding vines lie on property just east of Calistoga, where the vines are protected by the Palisades Mountains and cooled by the breeze from the Chalk Hill Gap. The harvested fruit is rich and concentrated, lending intense character to the finished wine. Under the direction of winemaker Francoise Peschon, Araujo produces four wines each year: the Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard; Altagracia, a second estate Cabernet; Syrah Eisele Vineyard; and Sauvignon Blanc Eisele Vineyard. In some vintages, a Viognier may also be produced.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
