There are 1,400 six-packs of the 2002 Syrah Reva Vineyard Estate. Tasted just after bottling, it was performing spectacularly well. Its opaque purple color is accompanied by a classic bouquet of creme de cassis, blackberries, and touches of new oak, tar, and sweet leather. It is a spectacular, dense, opulent, full-bodied effort with good minerality as well as structure. It should drink well for 10-15 years.

Dark-hued, with a rich core of meaty, beefy, peppery Syrah that shows a remarkable level of concentration and depth-sheer power, if you will-finishing with an exotic mix of floral, berry, leather and beef scents. 1,500 cases made.

($56) Full ruby. Wild aromas of roasted red berries, game, smoke and roasted herbs. Supersweet, dense and lush, with a strong raspberry flavor. Impressively thick, pliant wine with enough balancing acidity to retain freshness. Finishes very long and sweet, with suave tannins.

Site Blog: Unidentified Appellation The deepest and darkest colored wine of the flight was a pedal to the medal thrill ride that erupted like Mount Kilimanjaro. Inky, palate staining flavors of super-ripe blueberries, blackberry reduction sauce, tar, white flowers and a cornucopia of Asian spices fluttered throughout the palate like a muscular ballerina dancer. Layers and layers of rich fruit dazzled in their concentration and admirable poise, in spite of the sheer size of the wine. This puppy was a tour de force that demonstrates what controlled explosion is all about

About This Producer

Alban Vineyards is a California wine estate producing various Rhone style blends and varietal wine. The winery is located in Edna Valley, near Arroyo Grande in the southern corner of San Luis Obispo County.

Starting in 1985, John Alban planted grapes for other people until he bought an estate in 1989. With a focus on creating wines made from Rhone Valley varieties, Alban became one of the pioneers in the Rhone Rangers movement, and is considered one of the most influential American Rhone producers.

Within a 250-acre (100 ha) area, the vineyard area extends 60 acres (24 ha), and is planted with varieties Syrah, Viognier and Roussanne. Grenache and Roussanne are also sourced from vineyards located in the warmer Paso Robles AVA.

Among the vineyard designate wines produced are the Lorraine Vineyard, Reva Vineyard Syrah and Seymour's Vineyard Syrah. Alban also produces Pandora, a blend of Grenache and Syrah, and a botrytized dessert wine.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
