Wine Spectator | Rating: 89

A subtle, somewhat subdued effort, with lots of rich creamy mocha, wild berry and espresso bean flavors that pick up a touch of earth and sage and finish with a long, intense and concentrated aftertaste. 1,052 cases made.

An aromatic, sexy Syrah, Viader's 2002 offers up scents of ripe figs, plums, smoke, currants, and flowers. Medium-bodied and soft, with low acidity, it is a seductive, alluring, elegant effort to enjoy now and over the next 3-4 years.

($65) Medium red-ruby. Plum , game and smoky oak on the nose. Sweet, supple and vinous, with red fruit and game flavors of moderate ripeness and depth. An edge of acidity gives shape to the wine, but I'd like to have seen more del ineation and varietal character.

The anti-California syrah: oak in balance just hinting. Jammy fruit of stewed plums, dark cherries, little earthiness or mushroom. Delish.

About This Producer

VIADER is a leading Napa Valley winery estate established in 1986 by Delia Viader, and recognized for consistently producing high quality red wines. The estate is located 1200 feet above the Napa Valley floor just north-east of St. Helena on the steep, rocky slopes of Howell Mountain.

Since its inaugural vintage in 1989, the VIADER Proprietary blend has featured Cabernet Sauvignon with a significant component of Cabernet Franc. The second lable "V" is exclusively Petit Verdot. The estate VIADER Syrah is a blend of Barossa and Hermitage clones. DARE by Viader focuses on single varieties from select vineyards in the Napa Valley blended with their estate fruit. DARE Cabernet Sauvignon features fruit sourced from Lewelling Vineyards in St. Helena. DARE Cabernet Franc uses fruit from Stagecoach Vineyards in Oakville. DARE Tempranillo is made from a Ribera del Duero clonal selection sourced from the northeast side of the Napa Valley. VIADER also produces a very limited amount of Cabernet-based dry DARE Rose.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
