Still firm, backward and atypically youthful for a 2002, Rudd's blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot displays enormous promise, but it needs to be forgotten for another 3-5 years. Its inky/blue/purple color is followed by notes of graphite, roasted coffee, subtle barbecue smoke, blackberries, blueberries and hints of acacia flowers, ink and camphor. Rich, full-bodied and layered, it should be at its peak between 2017-2037.

Dense, rich and focused, with a solid core of ripe currant, blackberry, earth, herb and anise, framed by a firm wall of tannins.

($90; blended with 9% cabernet franc and 5% each petit verdot and malbec) Medium ruby. Aromas of redcurrant, tobacco, cedar, loam and menthol, with a whiff of roast coffee. Rich but dry and savory; smooth and aromatic. Subtly complex flavors of currant, lead pencil, cedar, loam and menthol. Finishes with plenty of fine tannins that will need a bit of time to unwind.

Terrific wine. Soft fruit mixed with meat, supple silky tannin, and the graphite/saddle leather that one would only expect from right bank Bordeaux. Finish is lacking though, dissipates too quickly. Drink up!

Translucent medium black cherry with moderately thick and slow moving legs. The legs show only trace amounts of color. Reticent aromas but with a lasting impact of cherry, milk, vanilla, and cedar. Oak is deftly handled and only provides an additional nuance rather than dominating the wine. Nicely textured with significant tannin and sufficient acidity. There is just enough fruit to carry the wine for a few years to let the wine?s structure soften but it is doubtful there is enough for the extended aging needed to develop additional complexity. Frankly, I expected more power and amplitude in the 2002 vintage. This is the third release from Rudd's estate vineyard in Oakville. The vineyard was originally the location of Girard Winery. Rudd has done a lot of work on the vineyard since purchasing it from Girard ?basically they replanted the vineyard. The 2002 is a blend of 79% Cabernet (Clone 337), 11% Franc, 6% Petite Verdot, 3% Merlot, and 1% Malbec that was aged in 95 percent new French oak for 20 months before being fined and bottled without filtration.

About This Producer

Leslie Rudd, manager of Standard Beverage Corporation and Chairman of Dean & DeLuca, turned his attention to making his mark in the wine industry in 1996. He purchased a 55-acre estate in Oakville and put his substantial resources behind replanting the site, raising the bar of quality at every turn. Joining Rudd in this endeavor are Charles Thomas, former winemaker at Mondovi and Cardinale, and Terry Mathison, who has been hailed for his innovative viticultural practices. Fewer than 6000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, a Cabernet-based blend, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay are produced at this estate.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
