The 2002 Volnay Santenot has a lovely open, generous bouquet with vibrant red fruit: redcurrant, freshly picked raspberry and wild hedgerow ' perhaps just a touch of pine cone in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded, succulent entry. It feels harmonious and luscious in the mouth, the tannins just beginning to soften after a decade in bottle. There is something quite feminine about the 2002 although it does not quite possess the complexity or nuance of the 2005. Drink 2015-2030. Tasted September 2013.

($103; bottled in July of 2004) Medium red. Superripe aromas of red cherry, redcurrant, licorice, menthol and earth. Fat, rich and full in the mouth, with the most obvious sweetness of these 2002s. This really coats the palate with flavor. The wine's acids and tannins are deceptively gentle at first, and the wine is surprisingly accessible, but there's plenty of structure here for aging.

The nose positively explodes from the glass, revealing very ripe, intense, elegant, complex black fruit aromas that complement ultra refined, precise, textured and pure middle weight, concentrated and deep flavors of breathtaking purity. This is very pinot in style and while the flavors appear supple, there is ample buried structure that arrives with a rush on the finish, as though it were late for something. This will require a few years to completely harmonize but it should be well worth the wait and for the truly patient, the balance is so exceptional here that it should be capable of at least 15 years of improvement, perhaps more.

About This Producer

Dominique Lafon has an unwavering loyalty to traditional winemaking, but the flexibility to know when and where progressive techniques are warranted. The vineyards are biodynamic, and wines are barrel fermented, and bottled nearly two years after harvest. Comtes Lafon has one of the deepest, coldest cellars in Burgundy and this has a most positive effect upon the stellar quality of the wines, as it allows for very lengthy, complete fermentations and aging. The result is wines that are made to last and enjoy over decades. As Clive Coates so succinctly states, "[this is] one of the few indisputably three-star white wine estates in Burgundy." Lafon specializes in Premier Cru Meursault and Volnay Pinot Noir.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
