This beautiful hillside vineyard is situated behind the Dominus Estate in Yountville. The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Paradise Hills Vineyard (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) has turned out even better than I predicted seven years ago. Made by Helen Turley when she was the consultant at Blankiet from tightly spaced, steep hillside vineyards planted by her husband, John Wetlaufer, it exhibits a beautiful nose of flowers, high quality unsmoked cigar tobacco, creme de cassis, chocolate, espresso and blueberries. Extraordinarily young, fresh and fabulously concentrated, this wine still impresses with its intensity, complexity and youthfulness. It will probably not peak in quality for a decade, and has 20-30 years of further aging potential.

($125) Saturated ruby. Knockout nose combines blueberry pastille, black raspberry, minerals, violet, espresso and sexy oak. Hugely complex, superripe and dry, with flavors of dark berries, bitter chocolate, mocha, smoke and minerals that reach every nook and cranny of the palate. This is just at the limit of surmaturite (the alcohol here is 14.7%, high for this site but not at all excessive by today's North Coast cabernet standards), but does not cross over the line. Finishes with broad, spreading tannins that reach the front teeth and come across as even lusher than those of the 2002 merlo t.

Nose of prune, plum and licorice plus a bit of soft alcohol. This has tannins front to back with notes on the front and the back of the tongue. This was built to age. Fruit is ripe and mature and the color is dark purple. Quite tasty, refined and elegant. Nuanced rather than powerful. I like this wine but I guess I'm still thinking it needs more time in spite of friends and critics suggesting its peaking now. I'd like to see the tannins mellow a bit more and expose the fruit. We've saved half the bottle and I will amend the notes if tomorrow is substantially different.

About This Producer

Located in the western hills of Yountville, in the foothills of the Mayacamas range, Blankiet shares a founding date with Arietta. In 1996, the husband and wife team of Claude and Katherine Blankiet, with the aid of viticulturist David Abreu, and winemaker Helen Turley, created a stable of wines that validate the extraordinary terroir of their 16 acres of vineyards. The first eight vintages were made by Turley, but now the winemaking team consists of consulting oenologist Michel Rolland and winemaker Martha McClellan-Levy.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
