A last minute addition, Rousseau's 2002 Clos St. Jacques nearly stole the show (actually it did!), proving why it is revered among Burgundy lovers. Arguably one of the youngest and most vibrant wines of the evening, the Clos St. Jacques impressed for its intense fruit and phenomenal balance. It was the perfect ending to a fabulous night of food, wine and conversation.

Copious quantities of spicy black cherries explode from the glass of the 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques. Medium-bodied, complex, and deep, this is a truly delicious wine. Its satin-textured personality coats the taster's palate with boisterous dark cherry, cinnamon, spicy oak, and blackberry flavors that linger in its extensive finish.

A background note of new oak frames superbly complex aromatics of ripe and elegant red and black fruit aromas followed by round, dense, mineral-laden flavors that display excellent intensity from the mid-palate all the way to the lengthy backend. This is very sappy and completely coats and stains the palate with dusty tannins and a finish that lasts and lasts. Very impressive.

($180) Good dark red. Sexy aromas of black raspberry, redcurrant, blueberry, roast coffee and nutty oak. Dense but fine-grained and elegant, with enticing flavors of black raspberry, blueberry, violet and spices. Finishes very long and subtle, with firm tannins and strong spice character.

Mid crimson. Some mossiness on the nose with definite tertiary development. Bold and fine and confident without so much plump fruit – a little hard in fact. Not as exciting at first as I would have expected given the reputation of vintage and producer but it evolved in the glass. Pretty tough on the finish. Needs lots of time. It’s going to get there and is only just starting to show its class.

Surprisingly light in color on opening but the color deepens to become hued a brilliant light blood red after a few hours. Still an infant aromatically ? with effort nuances of earth, cherry, cranberry, and smoky game can be coaxed out of the glass. Oak is very well integrated and does not show as much influence as I would expect given its exposure. Taut and racy flavors ? this wine has more than enough acidity to reward extended cellaring. Tannins are significant but smooth and finely grained. Formidable length. Made from 75 plus year old vines, the Domaine treats its five and a half acre monopole the same way it does its most acclaimed Grand Crus: 90% of the grapes are destemmed and after a 15 day open top fermentation the wine is aged in 100% new oak for 20-22 months. The wine is racked two to three times during its elevage and is lightly filtered prior to being put in glass. With time my rating may prove conservative.
