A wonderful orchestration of ripe fruit. Smooth, rich and harmonious, with layers of plum, wild berry, blackberry, black olive and spice. Tightly focused, with a fleshy texture, layers of complexity and depth and a long, persistent finish that keeps you coming back for another sip. 2,760 cases made.

A very strong showing for this wine, which is the quintessential Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon, with loads of earthy soil undertones intermixed with sweet kirsch and black currant fruit. Some underbrush notes interwoven with forest floor and black currants hit the palate with resounding authority, yet retain their elegance and finesse in this medium to full-bodied wine, which is approaching full maturity. It should continue to drink well for another 15 or more years.

Bright ruby-red. Cassis, bitter chocolate and strong oak tones on the nose. Intensely flavored and juicy, with fairly intense flavors of currant, licorice, chocolatey oak and herbs. Firm acids frame the wine and give it style. Finishes with firm, toothdusting tannins and repeating notes of oak and herbs.

Relatively light colour for such a young California Cab ? but that?s still pretty deep crimson! Quite intense ? the terroir effect is struggling to rise above the alcohol! A slight mineral note. Hint of almonds. Sweet and very flattering. Bit of dark chocolate. Tannins pretty well hidden under all that ripe fruit with quite a bit of acidity. A broad mouthful of fruit spreads across the palate. Bit like a slinky, that spiral than ?slinks? down the stairs? 14.8%

Excellent color with high-toned plum and wood in the nose. Enjoyable graham cracker and toasty notes on the finish. Overly tannic and stern. I doubt age will ever ameliorate the excess tannin. Reminds me of a 1980s (1985) Rutherford Cabernet but at its core this wine is a rather pedestrian Napa Valley Cabernet that is grossly overpriced.

About This Producer

Situated at the base of the Mayacamas Range on the Rutherford Bench, this sixty-one acre property has ideal soils, microclimate and location. The estate's potential was recognized by some of the first Napa Valley settlers and was planted to vineyards in the mid 1860's. Today the certified organic estate is home to the Staglins, fifty-one acres of vines, an underground winery, the historic homestead and a solar array.

Staglin is undoubtedly within the top tier of California Cabernet producers. In addition to the flagship Staglin Family Vineyard label, they also produce a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay under the Salus label.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
