From the undeniable first-growth quality site comes the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard. When the fruit from this vineyard is handled properly, the resulting wine often flirts with perfection. Hobbs' 2001 boasts a dense blue/purple color along with an incredibly pure nose of spice box, cedarwood, creme de cassis, blueberry pie and subtle smoke as well as graphite notes that could easily pass for a first- or second-growth Pauillac. Broad, expansive, full-bodied flavors reveal stunning purity, amazing depth and richness, and a finish that goes on for nearly a minute. Still youthful, but oh, so impressive, it is hard to resist now, but it should be even better in 5-8 years, and keep for 30-40+ years.

Smooth, dark, rich and seductive; a remarkably complex and concentrated wine brimming with ripe, silky currant, blackberry, black cherry and fresh earth and pencil lead nuances. It firms up nicely on the finish, exhibiting ripe, flavorful tannins and a long, persistent finish that reveals extra depth facets. 895 cases made.

Deep, full ruby. Cassis, bitter chocolate and mint on the nose; if the Hyde cabernet is in the style of Bordeaux, this is quintessential Napa Valley. Tightly wound and extremely primary, with flavors of black fruits, licorice and menthol. Very firmly built, even a bit ungiving today, with the wine's 85% new oak component contributing to its substantial tannic clout. Will merit an even higher score if bottle aging brings more generosity of texture.

Site Blog: The Wine Forum A wonderful birthday wine for me today. Complex, great depth, good length, the wine was a complete wine but maybe not in its best place right now as it went in and out really good and some ordinary phases. Color: not showing much age, deep red core with vibrant red edges. Nose: pencil lead, cherry, cedar, black currants Palate: concentrated but not heavy, elegant but at the same time persistent through the mid-palate straight to the long, complex finish. The fruit attacks up front and stretches through to the finish which is still pretty tannic but in the classic To Kalon Cabernet style.

About This Producer

When Paul Hobbs founded his eponymous winery in 1991, he set out to produce small lot, hand-crafted, vineyard designate wines. He began with just three - one Chardonnay, one Pinot Noir and one Cabernet Sauvignon.

Over the years, the small family of wines has grown to over a dozen as numerous new and historic vineyards have captured Hobbs' attention since that first vintage. The current wines are the result of years of perseverance, patience and experimentation in Hobbs' continuing adventure with wine. It is his great hope that the fruit-driven, complex wines he makes with his dedicated team will continue to appeal to many people around the globe.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
