($32) Good medium ruby. Smoky aromas of currant, dark chocolate, mocha, cedar, gunflint and black pepper; shows some rather syrah-like notes. Then lush, full and dense, with the gunflint character carrying through on the palate. More viscous than the 2000 example, with a hint of raisin but also ripe, harmonious acidity. Finishes with full, broad tannins and excellent length. From a vineyard that winemaker Wells Guthrie says is too steep to permit use of a tractor, and a yield of barely a ton an acre.Author: Stephen Tanzer
