Wine Advocate | Rating: 95

The 2001 Grenache Old Vines Kangarilla Vineyard's saturated ruby/plum color is followed by a big, extroverted nose of peppery black raspberries, sweet cherries, earth, and loamy soil scents. Awesome concentration, massive body, but good acidity and tannin work in tandem to give definition and vigor to this behemoth.

Bright and tangy, blackberry, cherry, mineral and chocolate flavors that last beautifully on the velvety finish. Picks up hints of mint and pepper as the finish goes on and on. Tannins have grip. 400 cases imported.

($38) Bright, dark red. Pure, aromatic nose combines black cherry, tar, licorice, pepper and eucalyptus. Lush, dense and pure, with fresh, sharply delineated flavors of dark berries and pepper. Finishes long, strong and sweet, with firm but fine tannins. An excellent showing today.

Nice concentration. Ripe red raspberry, kirsch, candied cherries and pleasant cherry cough syrup flavor. Tannins add good structure. Long finish.

About This Producer

Owner Roman Bratasiuk shows a devotion to the simple tenets that yield some of the best Shiraz fruit grown in Australia. From the flagship Astralis vineyard, he hand-harvests fruit from over 75-year-old dry-farmed vines and allows the indigenous yeasts to work their magic. The resultant wine is unctuous and viscous, yet harmonized, and expresses those elements which define the essence of great Shiraz - black fruit, bramble, super concentrated cassis and spice, undercurrents of tobacco, coffee and licorice root.

Clarendon Hills also produces wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Semillon.

Wine Varietal: Grenache

One of the most widely planted varieties in the world, Grenache is most well known as the base variety in wines from the Southern Rhone, such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Cotes-du-Rhone, and Gigondas. Grenache thrives in hot, arid climates all over the world particularly in the Mediterranean and Australia. Its origin is believed to be the Roussillon region of southern France (formerly Spain - where it is grown today and is known as Garnacha). Grenache is used in blends to round out Rhone-style reds to soften harsher varieties such as Syrah and Carignan. It is also used for rose wines. Typical descriptors for Grenache include raspberries, strawberries. black currants, black cherries, black olives, coffee, gingerbread, honey, leather, black pepper, tar, and herbes de Provence.
