($80) Good ruby-red color. Vibrant aromas of blackberry, violet, tobacco, cedar and chocolatey oak. Sweet, supple and silky, with a burnished oak element and broad, fine tannins. Distinctly creamy in the middle, even on the soft side. Not quite as gripping as it appeared to be from barrel a year ago, but aromatic and suave. The cabernet franc was less potent in 2001 than in 2002, notes Viader, who told me that her wine is always under 14%.

Blackish crimson ? a very deep colour. Tarry nose. Complete and rich. Sweet, round and full. Quite a blockbuster though with a neat dry finish. Exceptionally persistent. Quite alcoholic but still well balanced. Round and powerful though more jagged than the 2002.

Displaying loads of complexity, this blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Cabernet Franc has a nose of bay leaf, black currants, cedar in a very perfumed, medium-bodied, quintessentially elegant style. It is not a far-fetched comparison to call this Napa Valley Cheval Blanc, although that wine is a nearly equal part blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon rather than Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Dark plum/purple, pure, and close to full maturity, this wine should continue to age nicely for at least another decade or more.

Graceful and complex, with layers of spice, dried berry, mocha, roasted herb and tobacco, smooth on the finish, with ripe integrated tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. 2001 California Cabernet blind retrospective (June 2011). Drink now through 2018. 4,800 cases made.

Site Blog: The Wine Forum Color: Black, dark purple...almost inky. Nose: A black currant bonanza! Spicy cedar and some funk hung out around the massive black currant perfume. Palate: Surprise, lots of black currants, some black cherry, sweet tobacco, very full bodied. Everything is in balance for such a large wine. Still youthful. The finish was long and slightly one dimensional...it almost belly flopped on the palate as opposed to fanning out.

VIADER is a leading Napa Valley winery estate established in 1986 by Delia Viader, and recognized for consistently producing high quality red wines. The estate is located 1200 feet above the Napa Valley floor just north-east of St. Helena on the steep, rocky slopes of Howell Mountain.

Since its inaugural vintage in 1989, the VIADER Proprietary blend has featured Cabernet Sauvignon with a significant component of Cabernet Franc. The second lable "V" is exclusively Petit Verdot. The estate VIADER Syrah is a blend of Barossa and Hermitage clones. DARE by Viader focuses on single varieties from select vineyards in the Napa Valley blended with their estate fruit. DARE Cabernet Sauvignon features fruit sourced from Lewelling Vineyards in St. Helena. DARE Cabernet Franc uses fruit from Stagecoach Vineyards in Oakville. DARE Tempranillo is made from a Ribera del Duero clonal selection sourced from the northeast side of the Napa Valley. VIADER also produces a very limited amount of Cabernet-based dry DARE Rose.
