Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 93

Named after their talented viticulturalist and winemaker, Elias Fernandez, the Relentless cuvee was introduced a few years ago and is a blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Petite Sirah aged 32 months in 100% new French oak. It is a terrific wine, and the good news is that there are about 2,500 cases produced. The 2001 Relentless shows a full-bodied powerful style, an inky purple color, and a big, peppery, blackberry and raspberry-scented nose with a hint of graphite and earth. Rich, full-bodied, but young and primary, this wine should drink nicely for 10-12 years.

Sleek, rich and intense, with a tight beam of wild berry, black cherry, pepper and spice, picking up dark chocolate and mocha notes while revealing depth and concentration. Plenty of tannins on the finish, too. Syrah and Petite Sirah. 2,500 cases made.

($60; 81% syrah and 19% petite sirah) Full, bright ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry, bitter cherry, violet and sassafras. At once sweet and juicy, with supple, pliant flavors of dark berries and cola lifted by a floral component. Finishes sweetly oaky and persistent. Carries its 14. 9% alcohol gracefully.

Site Blog: The Wine Forum Color: Dark and brooding with red edges Nose & Palate: Blackberry, blueberry; meaty and gamey notes. Smoother than the 2002, if just more refined with an additional year of age. Blackberry, some spice, meaty beef, delicious! Big but balanced with more oak that I like but it worked well in the integration of the big fruit.

About This Producer

John Shafer began working and replanting steep, rocky vineyards in Napa Valley's Stags Leap District in 1972, and has since built Shafer into one of the most sought-after labels from Napa. John, his son Doug, and winemaker Elias Fernandez call themselves farmers, and are proud of it. Doug took over the vineyards in 1989, and within a year began to integrate organic techniques into his vineyards while the term "organic" still elicited sideways looks. "My soils were getting tired," Doug says. "They had been farmed since 1922." He installed solar panels in 2004, and now enjoys watching his batteries send power back to the grid. Elias was hired by Shafer in 1984 and named winemaker in 1994. Shafer Hillside Select is a benchmark wine of the Stag's Leap District, with a string of awards too long to list. Aged a full four years prior to release, it is, in the words of Robert Parker, "One of the world's, as well as Napa's, most profound Cabernet Sauvignons."
