Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($49; 75% tempranillo, 15% garnacha and 5% each of graciano and mazuelo) Bright medium red. Expansive bouquet of musky red and dark berries, medicinal cherry, rose oil and Asian spices. Juicy raspberry and rose pastille flavors are framed by silky tannins and given a boost by zesty minerality. Packs a solid punch but comes off almost weightless. The tannins fade into the sweet fruit on the finish, which is strikingly pure and very persistent. Lovely right now.

Perfectly fine, but nothing special. Perhaps it suffered in comparison, but I was underwhelmed....

About This Producer

For over one hundred and thirty years, three generations of the Lopez de Heredia family have devoted themselves to producing exceptional and unique wines.

Vina Tondonia is the bodega's most famous vineyard and product. Tondonia is a beautiful vineyard of over 100 hectares, situated on the right bank of the river Ebro, where the most typical Rioja wines are grown. Apart from Tondonia, Lopez de Heredia owns three more vineyards, all of which are also set in the Rioja Alta region. These are the "Vina Cubillo," "Vina Bosconia" and "Vina Zaconia."

The estate uses typical Rioja varieties: Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo for reds, and Viura and Malvasia for whites. Vineyard care, a scrupulous selection of grapes, aging in oak barrels in the heart of deep underground galleries, and further aging in bottles, all contribute to making these illustrious wines with their exceptional bouquet.

Wine Varietal: Tempranillo

Tempranillo is Spain's noble grape. Grown mostly in northern Spain, some of the best Tempranillo wine comes from the regions of Rioja and the Ribera del Duero. This grape enjoys cooler climates and is sensitive to pests and adverse weather conditions. While Tempranillo can be bottled alone, it is often blended with other Spanish grapes such as Grenache, Carignan, and more recently, Cabernet Sauvignon. Tempranillo is also grown in the Duero region of Portugal where the grapes are commonly blended to make Port. Tempranillo wines may be consumed young, but are regarded as being at their best when aged. There are a multitude of synonyms for Tempranillo depending on where it is grown. Typical descriptors for Tempranillo include berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather, meat and herbs.
