Clean and sleek, with tobacco, berry and plum character, medium body and a silky, fresh finish. Firm and balanced Lynch. 40,830 cases made.

The fully mature 2001 exhibits aromas of tapenade, bay leaf, licorice, red and black currants, damp earth and new saddle leather. Medium-bodied and atypically elegant and charming for a Lynch Bages with soft, fully resolved tannin and a moderately long finish, it is much lighter than a great vintage such as 2000.

Mid crimson. Sweet, spicy and lifted. Juicy. Transparent. Very easy to like. A bit chewy on the end. A very solid performance. Looking good!

Site Blog: Foodie Confidential Nose was classic earthy Bordeaux. Palate was typical Bordeaux but with occasional bursts of Napa type dark fruit that would quickly disappear. Rich with chocolate/coffee undertones. Interesting wine but lacked the depth and complexity of a stronger vintage. 92 pts.

About This Producer

Located just outside the town of Pauillac, Chateau Lynch Bages is famous for its Cabernet-based wines, which typify the best of the appellation. The estate is classified as one of eighteen Fifth Growths from the official 1855 classification; many experts, though, would argue that its quality merits it a place among the Second Growths. Typical Lynch-Bages reveals a wonderful bouquet, rich tannins, a long finish, and softness and complexity with age. From its founding in the 1600s, the chateau was owned by many generations of the Lynch family, and in the 1930s, was purchased by the Cazes family, who continue operations today. The finest vintages over the last fifty years include 1961, 1982, 1989, 1990, 1996 and 2000. In addition to its flagship red, Chateau Lynch Bages also produces a white wine and a second label called Haut Bages Averous.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
