Complex, riveting aromas of dusty berry, anise and wild blackberry carry over to the palate in a tight, concentrated manner, offering great density, richness and complexity. Finishes with a return to the dusty berry flavors and firm tannins. 2,785 cases made.

Site Blog: Unidentified Appellation Serious and substantive in its perfume of incense, crushed plum, smoke, forest bark that foreshadow a silky and explosive mouthful of pinot fruit. The flavors are pure, reminiscent of a top vintage of Clos des Papes (usually the comparison is the other way around, but I've just been drinking so much damn Chateauneuf that I can'thelp but see Pinot in a Grenache light now!) in the spades of raspberry and kirsch liqueur that are offered up. As the wine sits in the glass, scents of moss, loam and damp meadow emerge. This wine is maturing beautifully and expresses a sense of sheer transparency that I?d aspire to attain if I were a winemaker in California.

Red tart cherry smells and flavors. Not nearly as mature as I would have thought. Zesty acidity, dense fruit, bit hot, red with very slight bricking. Lacks a bit of clarity and focus.

Browning medium ruby, slightly cloudy. Earthy cola and red fruit nose, with noticeable oak nuances. The palate follows the nose, with herbal and spice characteristics added in. Medium minus finish. Showing signs of age, and not as lovely as prior bottles.

Slightly cloudy but still nearly translucent red colored wine with a Burgundian (Cote de Beaune) nose of cherry, plum, spice, mint, and light earth. Elevated acidity somewhat mars the wine on the palate. Still, it offers plenty of candied fruit and oak flavors. Drink now to 2006+. 88 points ? not one of Kistler?s best efforts.

About This Producer


Kistler Vineyards is a small family-owned winery located in the Russian River Valley specializing in Burgundian style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Since its first vintage in 1979, the winery has grown in size to produce 25,000 cases per year. Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler share the winemaking responsibilities, while Mark also acts as chemist and business manager. The winery, completed in 1992, is located on their Vine Hill Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. Kistler's fruit is sourced from various vineyards across Napa and Sonoma counties. Kistler Vineyards' wines are released semi-annually and almost exclusively to its mailing list.
