(a blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 7% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot): Ruby with a pale rim. Rich, ripe nose offers red cherry, plum, spice, mineral and violet aromas. Dense, chewy and fresh, with precise, intense red and black fruit flavors complicated by a hint of licorice. Features a persistent saline note on the rich, long, slightly chunky finish. A very successful Gruaud.

Surprisingly accessible as well as supple, this 2001 St.-Julien reveals a deep plum/purple color along with a rich bouquet of smoke, roasted vegetables, black currants, plums, licorice, and Asian spices. Velvety-textured and medium-bodied, with loads of fruit, and a plump, expansive, plush texture, this is an atypically forward Gruaud Larose to drink now and over the next 12-14 years.

This shows a rich and dense nose of blackberry, coffee and smoke. Full-bodied, with soft and round tannins and a long, smoky finish. Very fresh and velvety. GL is really doing excellent things these days, even in less-than-easy vintages. Best after 2008. 2,455 cases made.

Started out tight and slightly tart, but after 60 minutes in a wide decanter began to open. Nice balance of cassis, iron, plum and earth; quite corpulent on the palate with a long finish. Not as big or ripe as the 2003 or 2005, but very balanced and agreeable. Shows the smooth suppleness of a Margaux with the concentration, preciseness and bouquet of a Pauillac. Drink now through 2016.

About This Producer

The phrase "The King of Wines..." adorns its label, but this isn't Bordeaux Budweiser. In fact, St. Julien's Second-Growth-classified Chateau Gruaud Larose was known as "the wine of kings" back in the late 1700s and continues this legacy today. The most notable recent example is President Chirac serving 1990 Gruaud Larose to President Clinton at Parisian bistro L'Ami Louis in June, 1999.

The chateau occupies 84 hectares on a gravel-rich plateau in St. Julien neighboring Chateau Beychevelle. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the wines are often complex, opulent and flamboyant and always age worthy. The finest examples of Gruaud Larose in recent memory are 2010, 2000 and 1990.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
