International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($165) Good deep ruby-red. Aromas of cassis, violet and tobacco. Dense and rich but dry, with highly concentrated, complex flavors of plum, chocolate, tobacco and woodsmoke. Not at all a sweet style of Napa cabernet, but has power and impact and finishes with lovely ripeness. A rare collectible cabernet with alcohol under 14% (actually 13.9%).

Sturdy and concentrated, with rich flavors that build on a core of tight currant, black cherry, pencil lead, fresh earth, herbs and toasty oak, finishing with a complex aftertaste that's long and focused. 325 cases made.

2001 strikes again. After underperforming for quite some time, the 2001 bottling shows how good a Grace Family Cabernet can be. Tasted from bottle, each time the wine showed tons of sweet mocha laden fruit and excellent length. Plenty more sweet candied plum and menthol came through on the palate. Simply gorgeous. While it can be drunk now, the wine will mature in 2009 and hold for five plus years afterward.

About This Producer

In 1976, former stockbroker Dick Grace, along with his wife Ann and their children began growing Cabernet Sauvignon from their eponymous vineyard in St. Helena initially just as a hobby. With their first harvest sold to Caymus and subsequently bottled as one of the first single vineyard designated wines in Napa, they embarked upon the path to becoming one of America's wine legends. Besides maintaining the high reputation of their own vineyard and wines, the Graces have contributed to the development of many others, formerly employing Heidi Barrett, and providing budwood for Hartwell Estate, Vineyard 29, and Blank Family Vineyards. With limited production of and unrelenting demand for their wines, they also pioneered the mailing list/waiting list sales model prevalent among many cult cab producers today.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
