Very perfumed with blackberries, currants and vanilla. Full bodied, with silky tannins and a long finish. This is tight and racy. Very fine.

Good ruby-red color. Currant, tobacco, minerals, graphite and sexy oak on the nose. Dusty flavors of redcurrant and tobacco. At once broad and penetrating, with a subtle sweetness and very good intensity and cut. Very suave but also strong and long on the back end.

Shrewd consumers have been stocking up on Las Cases's second wine for many years, and why not? The 2001 Clos du Marquis tastes like a classified growth Bordeaux. Deep ruby/purple-colored, it is more open-knit and forward than its bigger sibling, exhibiting lovely cassis fruit intermixed with underbrush, earth, and subtle background oak. Enjoy this approachable 2001 over the next 10-14 years.

About This Producer

The Second Growth classified estate of Leoville Las Cases continues to produce wines of exceptional quality, rivaling those of the First Growth producers. The wines are full-bodied, concentrated and complex, and have tremendous aging potential. Typical blends consist of over 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, with lesser amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and a small amount of Petit Verdot. Bargain hunters should also keep an eye out for the estate's second label, Clos du Marquis.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
