($39) Red-ruby. Flamboyant, wild Chateauneuf du Pape aromas of raspberry, pepper, leather, Cuban cigar tobacco, fruitcake, game and truffle. Explosive, layered and deep, with captivating flavors of game, leather, melting chocolate cake, leather, incense and black pepper. Wonderfully suave and silky but with terrific verve and grip. Finishes with fine, palate-coating tannins and sneaky length. If someone sticks a glass of this in your face and you don't say Chateauneuf du Pape, you should give up wine drinking. The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape is a beauty! Classic and textbook in style, with ample cured meats, earth, herbs and mature currant and blackberry fruit, it flows onto the palate with full-bodied richness, a gorgeous texture and serious length. It's drinking beautifully now, but will continue to shine through 2021.

Supple and full of ripe, beautiful black fruit, this Provençal seducer coats the palate with its silky texture, delivering lavender, wet earth, mineral, smoke, lead pencil, plum and sweet tannins. Only on the finish does the tannic edge suggest short-term cellaring, but tempting now with steak or lamb. Another great achievement from Le Vieux Donjon. 4,165 cases made.

One of the appellation’s classic, old style offerings, the Michel family continues to produce an uncompromisingly long-lived, remarkably consistent Chateauneuf du Pape. The dark plum/purple-colored 2001 boasts a huge, Provencal-styled bouquet of ground pepper, lavender, roasted herbes de Provence, beef blood, and cranberry as well as black cherry liqueur. This perfumed effort exhibits sweet, broad, full-bodied flavors, moderately high tannin, and admirable density and chewiness. There are also hints of underbrush, new saddle leather, incense, and black fruits. This striking 2001 needs 1-3 years of cellaring. It will drink well for 12-15 years.

About This Producer

Le Vieux Donjon was founded by Marcel Michel, who did the first bottling at his domain in 1966. Since 1979 Marie Jose and Lucien Michel have run the property. The estate includes 14 ha of Chateauneuf du Pape, of which one ha is planted to white varieties. The vinification process is done in the traditional method with only one cuvee made of red and of white Chateauneuf du Pape. The cellars are situated on the route from Chateauneuf du Pape to Courthezon and the buildings at Avenue Saint Joseph serve as the private mansion for the family.
