Wine Spectator | Rating: 93

Aromas of blackberry, spices and dried mushrooms follow through to a full-bodied palate, with big velvety tannins and a long finish. This is powerful and layered. Big, juicy wine.

Cortonesi's 2001 Brunello di Montalcino is an intense effort packed with super-ripe vibrant dark fruit in a rich, concentrated style with outstanding persistence on the palate and great overall balance, although it finishes a bit hot. Today the tannins are a bit prominent but a few years of cellaring should do the trick.

($60) Deep red-ruby color. Dark berries, cola, licorice and a meaty nuance on the nose. Rich, broad and concentrated, with rather low-toned flavors of dark fruits, sassafras, earth and smoke. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and notes of leather, mocha and meat. This should be ideal served with roasted meats.
