Leslie Rudd's beautiful, fully mature 2001 Rudd Estate Proprietary Red (a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot) boasts a dense plum/purple hue as well as a sweet bouquet of chocolate, creme de cassis, truffles, damp earth and wood smoke. Opulent and medium to full-bodied with sweet tannins and low acidity, it can be enjoyed now and over the next 15+ years.

($75; includes 15% cabernet franc) Good full ruby. Superripe aromas of blackcurrant syrup, chocolate, tar and fruit cake. Dense, tarry and sweet, with cassis, licorice and fruit cake flavors. The building tannins are substantial and broad but not at all dry. Already delicious, but has the spine to develop in bottle for a decade or more. Rudd's 2001s were vinified by David Ramey but finished by Charles Thomas, who assumed winemaking responsibilities here in the spring of 2002.

Supple, with complex currant, anise, mineral, herb and sage flavors that are well-defined, adding hints of espresso and fresh earth. The tannins are ripe and fine-grained and the finish reveals extra dimensions of depth and complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. 1,950 cases made.

Definitely a 95 point bottle of wine. It took a good 1.5 hours for this to open up. In the beginning there was very little nose but a nice light graphite flavor with aromas of mild chocolate and lavender. However, later it exploded with firm deep graphite and a finish that was top notch. Well done Rudd!

Site Blog: The Wine Forum Solid, classic Oakville, hit of the Wine Library party...opened and gone in 40 minutes! Just proved everyone is a sucker for a good Napa Cabernet, even in sweltering heat! Color: Great color, red to dark red Nose: Classis Napa cab aromas of black and red fruits, cherry, sweet oak. Palate: All there but a tad young still, the tannins still needed just a little rounding out. All the great fruit is there, decent acidity, great structure. Last or second last of the Ramey wines, he left I think after 01-02!

About This Producer

Leslie Rudd, manager of Standard Beverage Corporation and Chairman of Dean & DeLuca, turned his attention to making his mark in the wine industry in 1996. He purchased a 55-acre estate in Oakville and put his substantial resources behind replanting the site, raising the bar of quality at every turn. Joining Rudd in this endeavor are Charles Thomas, former winemaker at Mondovi and Cardinale, and Terry Mathison, who has been hailed for his innovative viticultural practices. Fewer than 6000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, a Cabernet-based blend, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay are produced at this estate.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
