The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is still opaque and deeply colored, with killer blackcurrants, smoked meats, orange-tinged chocolate, roasted herbs and serious minerality all soaring from the glass. Just at the early stages of full maturity, this full-bodied, deep, rich and concentrated effort should be consumed over the coming 4-6 years.

Blockbuster Châteauneuf--rich and thick yet loyal to local customs with its traditional emphasis on plum, leather, wet earth, cedar, tobacco, coffee and mineral. A wine like none other--and unhindered by some modernistic oak treatment. Fabulously authentic stuff.

($95) Ruby-red. Roasted red plum, cherry liqueur and grilled meat on the nose; superripe but not over the top. Then thick, sweet, deep and young, with a compelling flavor of creme de cassis Powerful, dense, classic grenache en surmaturite Finishes with explosive length and lush, very fine tannins. Amazingly ripe, but wears its high alcohol gracefully. (European Cellars, Charlotte, NC)

Site Blog: Unidentified Appellation Much darker and more brooding in its personality, w/ deep, rich notions of grilled steak, cinnamon stick, leafy cloves, iron and the essence of pure kirsch liqueur. Extremely powerful and tannic in the palate, resembling the muscularity and intensity of dry port, while a savory undercurrent keeps things in check. This blockbuster won'tbe ready for prime drinking until at least 2011, but this Janasse V.V. is an absolutely stunning example of 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape. We were all a bit thrown off by the saturation of color, dense tannins and savory elements (all I could think of was Mourvedre, until the sweet kirsch kicked in as it evolved),

About This Producer

Up until 1973, patriarch and proprietor Aime Sabon sold the entire production of this estate to cooperatives. In 1991, his son Christophe took over the running of the Domaine La Janasse, named after a family camp in Courthezon. The grapes that go into the "Cuvee Chaupin" come from a parcel of vines planted in 1912 and produce the pure, graceful, yet opulent and firmly structured wines for which the domaine has become renowned. Roughly a quarter of these wines are AOC Chateauneuf du Pape.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
