Incredible aromas of flowers, currants, blackberries, and minerals. Full-bodied, with a supersolid core of fruit, incredibly finely knit tannins and a finish that goes on and on. This is really superb. Much better than from barrel. Giscours is really going places.

60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot; 29.9 g/l dry extract;13.2% alcohol): Medium deep ruby-red. Blackberry, cassis, sassafras, camphor and quinine on the nose. Sweet dark berry and bitter chocolate flavors show an almost liqueur-like creaminess, but bright acidity keeps this fresh midweight light on its feet. Finishes silky, balsamic and long, with tar, pepper and mineral notes providing grip.

The deep plum/purple-colored 2001 exhibits notes of melted licorice, barbecue spices, violets, black currants, and a hint of blackberries. Medium-bodied and fleshy, with a cunning style that sneaks up on the palate, building in increments, this pure, rich, concentrated yet elegant, charming effort provides further evidence of this chateau's strong rebound.

Beautiful ruby red, nose of blackberries, chocolate, fresh wild flowers, country air and candy - an absolutely beautiful ever changing nose, with a nice mouthfeel well integrated tannins and a 45+ second finish.

About This Producer

Located in the commune of Margaux, this chateau is ranked as a Third Growth property from the 1855 Classification of Medoc. Just before that classification, a wealthy Parisian, the Count de Pescatore, renovated this estate, and is given credit for bringing the wines back to a superior quality. After World War II, Nicolas Tari took over the estate, making some serious renovations that included replanting the vineyards and constructing a man-made lake that would later contribute to the terroir of the wines. Today the vineyard makeup is very typical of most fine Medoc estates - Cabernet Sauvignon (53%), Merlot (42%) and the remaining, Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc (5%). A quarter of the plot is considered old vine, with 40-year-old vines. The estate's second wine is called La Sirene de Giscours and outside the commune's border, the estate makes a bottling called Le Haut Medoc de Giscours.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
