Dark and dense, this very powerful Chateauneuf oozes dark chocolate, black currant, tar, mineral, grilled beef and roasted chestnut flavors that just won't quit. Yet despite its exotic range of flavors, it has a pure, silky core of fruit that remains steadfast through the extremely long finish. An awesome young wine. 2,350 cases made.

More open and exuberant than the 2000, with a sweeter core of fruit, the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape tastes like the essence of this region, with its garrigue, leather, ground herbs and sweet, licorice-laced blackberry fruit. It too is medium to full-bodied, balanced and beautifully textured on the palate, with a mature, yet still youthful profile that's perfect for prime- time drinking over the coming 2-4 years.

($60) Bright, deep red. Exotic aromas of raspberry liqueur, flowers, garrigue and pepper. Dense and thick, with impressive solidity but also a compellingly velvety texture and terrific verve in the mouth. Chewy flavor of raspberry liqueur. Builds and builds on the palate-staining, tactile finish. Has the sheer extract and structure to support extended bottle aging. (Weygandt-Metzler Importing, Unionville, PA)

Deep, subtle and meaty on the nose. And yet there is real energy on the palate – as though some very special engineering has got it airborne, despite its great charge of interesting flavours. This is a lovely, if quite developed wine. No need to hang on to it forever. In fact you could enjoy it a great deal now. Chewy finish augurs well for the future but is not so painful as to detract from the current pleasure.

About This Producer

The father and son team of Gerard and Laurent Charvin define the quintessential boutique domaine. From their 8 hectares of Chateauneuf-du-Pape vineyards, a small amount is kept from the best lots for their own bottling. Just over 80% is Grenache, with Mourvedre, Syrah and Vaccarese rounding out the blend. This Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a premium production with a palate of red fruit and berries with elegant white pepper, pink peppercorn and sweet garrigue.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
