It's hard to know what to write next about this fabulous wine, which not only has revealed the phenomenal potential of the blend of 80% Aglianico (for power and depth) and 20% Piedirosso (for aromatic complexity) but also demonstrated why Falernum, the wine produced in this area under the Roman Empire, was considered the greatest of the ancient world, capable - according to Petronius - of lasting 100 years. I'll make no predictions about the aging potential of the 2001 Terra di Lavoro, other than the fact that I will regrettably not be around for the centenary celebration, but I would be amazed if it did not last twenty five years. In the meantime, it gives back every nuance of aroma and flavor of the slopes on which it is grown, the blackberry/raspberry fruit, truffles, tar, underbrush, and warm volcanic soil in a packed but super-elegant format, rich, powerful, mouth-filling and palate-satisfying, concentrated, velvety, and flawless. To the owners, and to Riccardo Cotarella, the only possible words which can be expressed are those of simple gratitude for this unexpected miracle which appeared out of nowhere in 1994 and has not ceased to amaze ever since.

This is an extraordinary wine. It first smells like rubber, turning to intense minerals, blackberries and cherries. Full-bodied, with ultra fine silky tannins and a long, long finish. I have always loved it despite itsbeing difficult to taste when young. Made in beautiful hillside vineyards outside of Naples. Aglianico and Piedirosso. 750 cases made.

Terra di Lavoro (land of work ? named because the stony soil is difficult to work) is Campani's sole icon wine. Because it is from Campania it does not get the attention it deserves (although sadly there are enough informed consumers already to boost the price of the wine to the stratosphere.) The 20 acre vineyard is planted on the side of a volcano at 1300 feet above sea level. The wine receives 100% new French oak with medium toast aging (Allier & Nevers) for 12 months. Surprisingly ? especially given the wine?s might ? it is bottled after being fined and filtered. Talented Riccardo Cottarella has been the winemaker since the wine?s first vintage in 1993. The 2001 is black as night. It has a huge nose that one could mistake for a torrid vintage Cabernet from Bordeaux despite the wine being a blend of 80% Aglianico and 20% Piedirosso. Intense aromatics of vanilla, plum, clay, rose, mint, and oak. Very rich and incredibly concentrated with huge velvety tannin and excellent acidity. My score is attenuated based on my concern that the tannins may ultimately play too prominent of a role once this wine matures. Nevertheless, this wine is an experience not to be missed.
