Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 97

Monumental, with masses of blackberry, coffee, berry and cherry aromas. Full-bodied, with layers of ripe tannins. Goes on and on. Builds on the palate. I have never tasted a greater wine from here. Better than 1997. 4,000 cases made.

The 2001 Flaccianello della Pieve, a wine which was one of the pioneering examples of high level Sangiovese in Chianti Classico is, for me, the best in a long and distinguished series of vintages. A brilliant ruby-garnet, its rich aromas of raspberries, smoke, and vanilla are followed by ripe, supple, and elegant flavors, a satiny, classy, lengthy style, and a full finish and aftertaste.

Great nose – some really enticing development. In fact it seems more evolved than many 2001s. A dry end, with lots in the middle.

About This Producer

Located in the picturesque Florentine hillsides just outside the pastoral town of Panzano, Fontodi is the spectacular domain of the Manetti family. The vineyards are located in the valley of the Conca d'Oro (Golden Basin) and enjoy a cool climate and marl-rich soil that gives the fruit a signature high-toned, red cherry profile. The wines are studies in the profound elegance and muted power of the ancient Sangiovese grape. The "Flaccianello" is one of the original Super Tuscans (originated in 1981) that uses 100% Sangiovese from an eponymous single vineyard of superior quality. This is an incredible collectible that represents a seamless juxtaposition of traditional Tuscan flavor and New World richness.

Wine Varietal: Sangiovese

Italyâ??s most popular grape, Sangiovese is the top grape used in Tuscany including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many of Italyâ??s â??Super Tuscans.â?? At least 14 clones of Sangiovese exist which are grouped into the Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo families. Sangiovese thrives in a warm climate and consists of over 10% of Italyâ??s vineyard acreage (covering almost a quarter million acres). Over the past decade Sangiovese has become increasingly popular and successful in California as well. Typical descriptors for Sangiovese include candied or dried cherry, citrus, leather, violets and tea.
