International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92(+?)

Good dark red. Superripe, slightly reduced aromas of raspberry and mocha (this usually shows blacker fruits on the nose at this stage). Suave on entry, then musky, mellow and rich; less directly fruity than the Ginestra but simultaneously opulent and stylish. Finishes with big, rich, chewy tannins that coat the front teeth. Both this and the Ginestra seem much more than a year younger than the same two bottlings from the 2000 vintage.

Delicious, classic Barolo -- though on the dark and powerful end of the spectrum. Complex with a long finish, very well integrated and drinking great. All good.

About This Producer


This rather small estate in Monforte d'Alba is mainly known for its Barolo, but it also excels at producing great Barbera and Dolcetto and a delicious blend - Arte (Nebbiolo and Barbera). One of the leaders in the movement to modernize the winemaking process in Barolo, Domenico Clerico creates wines that are a bit more ripe fruit-oriented. However, he has such a deft and precise hand that the wines are never blowsy or overwrought. The result is wines that are attractive in their youth but gain in elegance, depth and texture as they evolve.

Wine Varietal: Nebbiolo


Big, dark, and bold, Nebbiolo is a robust variety with heavy tannins and a sometimes bitter profile. While areas outside Italy (Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, California, and South Africa) have begun cultivating Nebbiolo, the Italian region of Piedmont is where it reaches its greatest height. It is here, the historic home to Nebbiolo, where the finest Barolos and Barbarescos are produced. Many winemakers have compared this grape to Pinot Noir for its difficult growing habits and unpredictable cellar and aging behavior. Typical descriptors for Nebbiolo include roses, violets, tar, wild herbs, cherries, raspberries, truffles, and tobacco.
