Two terrific wines from Dalla Valle, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc) from their hillside vineyards in Oakville, exhibits a dense purple color along with a beautifully sweet perfume of cedarwood, creme de cassis, incense and spice box. Full-bodied and rich with gorgeous purity and texture as well as a multidimensional mouthfeel, it still has some tannins to shed and tastes like it is only 4-5 years old. It has at least two decades of life ahead of it.

($100) Bright ruby-red. Highly complex, expressive nose melds blueberry liqueur, black cherry, chocolate, coffee and cola. Densely packed, juicy and nuanced on the palate, with notes of cassis, bitter chocolate, leather and mint, all lifted by violet florality. Sharply delineated and powerfully structured wine, finishing with firm, toothcoating tannins. Perhaps more classic than the 2002, which features more early thickness and chewier tannins.

Impressive for its core of rich, chewy currant, blackberry, wild berry and cedary oak flavors. It packs a wallop, too, with its dense, chewy tannins, but on the finish the fruit pours through to reveal lots of depth and complexity. 2,000 cases made.

Already throwing considerable sediment, this deeply colored wine is fashioned for the long haul. Burgeoning primary aromas of new oak, plum, cherry, and butter with a slightly gamy overlay. Nicely concentrated fruit with good acidity. Fruit is deep and with time complexity will emerge. Tannins are substantial but are already turning round and plush. Still in the context of the 2001 vintage I would flamboyance. A California Cabernet Sauvignon for Bordeaux lovers.

About This Producer

From vineyards set 400 feet above the floor of Napa Valley, two critically-acclaimed powerhouse wines are crafted. Both the Cabernet Sauvignon (which includes just a touch of estate Cabernet Franc) and the Maya (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) showcase Oakville fruit in its most concentrated intensity. Production is limited to micro-quantities, making these wines sought-after prizes for collectors and wine enthusiasts alike.

Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle bought their family estate in 1982, realizing their vision of producing world-class wine. The first vintages were 1986 for the Cabernet and 1988 for the Maya, which went on to earn a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker for the 1992 vintage. Naoko Dalla Valle has maintained sole responsibility for the vineyards and winery since her husband's death in 1995. French enologist Michel Rolland consults bi-annually on winemaking and blending decisions.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
