Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89

($30) Medium red. Tangy aromas of raspberry, cherry, minerals and spices; calls to mind a Pernand-Vergelesses. Juicy, spicy and sweet, with intense, fairly dense red fruit flavors nicely shaped by ripe acids. Finishes with sweet tannins and lingering red fruits. (Clicquot Inc., New York, NY)

Drink Dates: 2003-2006
Translucent blood red colored wine with forward aromas of plum, brown sugar, a touch of anise, rose, and light oak shadings. Elegant gossamer flavors in the mouth with high but enjoyable acidity and persistent red fruit (strawberry) flavors. Will not make old bones but is a feminine very enjoyable Cote de Beaune styled Pinot for drinking right now.

About This Producer

Best known for its clean, crisp and vibrant Sauvignon Blancs, Cloudy Bay Vineyards has been at the forefront of the New Zealand wine craze since the mid-'80s. The winery is named for the first large bay down the eastern side of New Zealand's South Island, which is pictured on the label along with Mount Riley, the most prominent mountain in the area. The Marlborough region offers perfect growing conditions for Sauvignon Blanc, including long, hot summer days, followed by cool nights. Cloudy Bay is owned by the French luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, which maintains a controlling interest in the estate.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
