Sleek and racy, with a beautiful structure of very fine tannins and ripe fruit. There are minerals, currants and berries throughout, yet it's subtle and caressing. Lovely wine. I like this as much as the 2000.

($34-$40) Ruby-red. Ripe aromas of licorice, bitter chocolate, roasted herbs, tar and exotic spices. Supple, round and pliant, with redcurrant, licorice and herbal flavors. Finishes with surprisingly sweet tannins nicely buffered by the wine's fat. A very good showing for this wine.

Tasted on three separate occasions, this 2001 did not perform nearly as well from bottle as it did from cask. A blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, it exhibits aromas reminiscent of a Starbuck espresso, melted licorice, black currants, cherries, cedar, a notion of dried herbs, and elevated oak. With attractive texture and firm tannin in the finish, it requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 14-15. While it is an excellent, medium-bodied Pauillac, it is nowhere near as impressive as I anticipated from cask.

Classy pauillac, could be a little fruitter, but very smooth full bodied wine.

Light to medium red with purple highlights. A muted nose smelling mainly of wood with some lead and licorice overtones. A clean rather "average" Pauillac with a short finish with light wood and innocuous fruit flavors. Staying awake during a second glass may be difficult for some.

About This Producer

A fifth-growth chateau that consistently outperforms its rank, Clerc-Milon is part of the famous Rothschild family of estates. Purchased by Baron Philippe for a song in 1970 after it had fallen into extreme disrepair, the property saw a period of investment and re-habilitation and began again putting out quality wines in the early 1980s. Located in the northernmost region of the Pauillac appellation between Mouton-Rothschild and Lafite-Rothschild, Clerc-Milon is comprised of 43 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Camernere. Over recent years, Cabernet plantings have decreased, being replaced with more Merlot. The 14,000 case production is dominated by Cabernet, giving it firm structure and age-ability.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
