The 2001 Zinfandel, which includes a bit of Petite Sirah in the blend, possesses a plum/ruby color, medium to full body, and sweet aromas of peppery black cherry fruit, kirsch liqueur, and notions of old oak as well as incense.

($25) Full deep red. Aromas of redcurrant, plum, tobacco and loam. Fat, soft and plump, with sweet flavors of red fruits and spices. Finishes with fine, dusty tannins and lingering notes of currant and milk chocolate. Nicely pliant red wine, but I'm not sure I would have picked this as zinfandel.

A wine that is not always given its proper due in the Chateau Montelena portfolio. Drinking beautifully now and will for some time to come. Bravo Mr. Barrett!

About This Producer

"This soars out of the ordinary." -TIME, June 7, 1976 (Judgement of Paris, tasting quote)

This quote embodies the dedication to quality and the consistently elegant, classical style Chateau Montelena has embraced since the early days. The current offerings continue to display adherence to that handcrafted heritage. One of the original "blue-chip" estates of Napa, its illustrious history began in 1882 when Alfred L. Tubbs struck a deal to purchase 254 acres of land at the base of Mount St. Helena, two miles north of Calistoga. "Montelena" is a contracted form of Mount Saint Helena.

The present renaissance of this legendary estate began in 1972 under the leadership of James Barrett. It was thrust into the limelight after the famous Paris Tasting of 1976 when its 1973 Chardonnay walked away from stunned French judges with 1st place in the Chardonnay category. The continuing top-ranking results are testimony to the efforts of James' son Beau, who has maintained the quality performance level since 1982.

Wine Varietal: Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a black grape variety of Croatian descent. With no ties to France, Zinfandel has actually been linked to the Primitivo grape of Italy, but California is where the majority of Zinfandel is grown. This variety possesses extremely versatile characteristics from light and fruity, to jammy and ripe with high alcohol. Growing Zinfandel can be difficult due to its packed clusters and short stems, which make the vines prone to uneven ripening and mildew. Preferring a warm climate, Zinfandel is also grown in other western states in the United States as well as in Australia and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Zinfandel include red berry fruits, raspberry, blackberry, anise and pepper.
