($75; a blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot and 8% petit verdot) Good dark red. Cool but complex nose melds cherry, currant, cedar and lead pencil. Sweet on entry, then lively in the middle palate, with cool flavors of maraschino cherry, redcurrant, loam and mint. Higher-pitched and less pliant than the Eisele Vineyard cabernet, without the lush texture and ripeness of that wine. The tannins are less fine, but this second wine shows very good persistence.

Araujo?s second wine, Altagracia. has been produced since the 1999 vintage (i.e. since Michel Rolland was brought on board as a consultant). The 2001 is by far the best Altagracia yet produced and I don'tthink the Araujos would like people to taste the 2000 Estate versus the 2001 Altagracia head to head. The Altagracia was fermented in small stainless steel tanks and then aged for 21 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Medium black cherry red colored wine with a few thick, very slightly pigmented legs. A full and very forward nose of ripe cherry fruit, Oreo cookies, cocoa, slight vanilla, sweet plum, and light caramel. Smooth ripe tannins allayed with slightly excessive acidity. Plenty of flavor but the wine remains crisp, suave, and quite beguiling. Easy to drink a lot of this without even realizing it. The wine finishes quite long with plenty of fruit laced with supple oak. 80% Cabernet, 12% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot. Can'twait for the Estate. Drinks all too easily now but will last and improve over the next seven years.

About This Producer

The mission statement reads, in part, "To produce organically grown fruit and with this fruit make a singular wine of the highest caliber and distinction." By all accounts, Bart and Daphne Araujo are succeeding magnificently. The flagship wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon from their own Eisele Vineyards, is hailed by critics and desired by consumers in every vintage. Though first planted to Zinfandel and Riesling in the 1880s, the Eisele Vineyard has been the home of world class Cabernet since 1964. The low-yielding vines lie on property just east of Calistoga, where the vines are protected by the Palisades Mountains and cooled by the breeze from the Chalk Hill Gap. The harvested fruit is rich and concentrated, lending intense character to the finished wine. Under the direction of winemaker Francoise Peschon, Araujo produces four wines each year: the Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard; Altagracia, a second estate Cabernet; Syrah Eisele Vineyard; and Sauvignon Blanc Eisele Vineyard. In some vintages, a Viognier may also be produced.
