The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee may be one of the few 2000s that is better than its 1998 counterpart. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by sweet aromas of creme de cassis, kirsch liqueur, cedar, licorice, and pepper. It smells like an open-air Provencal market. Sweet, fat, opulent, and voluptuous, with fabulous fruit concentration, sweet tannin, and a long, 45+ second finish, this powerful, deep, seamless 2000 is impeccably well-balanced. A tour de force in traditional Chateauneuf du Pape, it is accessible now, but should age easily for 15-20 years.

($40; 14.8% alcohol) Full ruby-red. Liqueur-like aromas of black raspberry, black cherry and licorice. Lush, fat and full in the mouth, with superb concentration and richness. A seamless wine with great Chateauneuf du Pape character. Complicating notes of tar and chocolate. Finishes with dusty, broad tannins and great persistence. This can be enjoyed now with the right dishes but should age gracefully.

Beautiful traditional Chateauneuf, all built around mineral, smoke, leather and plum aromas. Good balance in this medium- to full-bodied red thanks to the clean, fresh fruit. The tannins are ripe but clamp down on the finish--a wine created for a great steak! 5,000 cases made.

From garrigue, to beef blood, asian spices and some kind of cool asian soy flavor after a few hours. Very nice to see how these mature and gain complexity.

A well made wine, seamless and well integrated wine with a nice finance. It held up well throughout the evening with spice and fruit present.

My wife and I celebrated our 5th Anniversary @ Stage Restaurant in Honolulu and I brought this bottle. What a beautiful wine! The waiter broke the cork in half and I successfully extracted the remainder. The second I put my nose in the bowl of the glass I knew this was going to sing. Indeed it did. Classic garrigue, spice, hint of smoke, rich flavors that changed and enticed throughout the evening. On pointe, Superlative!

Decanted 1hour. Fine color with only a little garnet at the edge. Very perfumed upon openng with quite a bit of brett (which blew off after about 40 minutes), leather, raw beef, bacon grease, forest duff, mushrooms, cigar smoke and anise. Medium bodied, elegant and expressive with fruit and acid in good harmony. This is not as big, meaty and dense as some other vintages e.g. 1989, which is perhaps my favorite, but beauifully crafted with black raspberry, interesting minerality, kirsch and white pepper. I think it comes up a tad short mid-palate'fruit may be on its way out?'but the finish is very, very long. Drunk over 2 hours with Thomas Keller's Slow Cooker Cassoulet (recommended BTW as an 'easy, rusticâ? cassoulet), the wine was a perfect match. Pegau continues to be one of my favorite wines.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
