Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 97

The plushest, most ostentatious and dramatic of all the Leovilles in 2000, this wine is already sumptuous, displaying some nuances in its huge nose of vanilla bean, black chocolate, jammy black cherries, cassis, and graphite in a flamboyant style. Opulent, savory, rich, and full-bodied, it is a head-turning, prodigious wine and a complete contrast to the extracted behemoth of Leoville Barton and the backward, classic Leoville Las Cases. The PoyferreâÂ?Â?s low acidity, sweet tannin and an already gorgeous mouthfeel make it a wine to drink now as well as over the next 25 or more years.

Superb. Vivid, with lovely aromas of berries, minerals, toasted oak and leather. Full-bodied, with extremely well-integrated tannins and a long finish. A wine to remember. Best ever from this estate. Best after 2010. 20,000 cases made.

A fantastic representation of St Julian. Chassis and dark fruits, lavender, leather and earthy tones. Still very fresh and vibrant, the tannins have softened and the wine is very well balanced. Should continue to develop for a few years yet.

About This Producer

Classified as a Second Growth estate, Château Léoville Poyferré is a rising star in Bordeaux, well-known for its aromatic and velvety wines. In recent years, the style has leaned toward a more complex and rich nature, and the estate has been receiving increasingly positive reviews. The vineyards are planted to a majority Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc comprising the remainder. The Saint-Julien property has been owned by the Cuvelier family since 1921, and Didier Cuvelier has been in charge of the estate since 1979. Much of the chateau's recent praise is due to Cuvelier, with the advice of consultant Michel Rolland, who has implemented many improvements to quality and style at Leoville Poyferre. In addition to its grand vin, the estate produces a second wine called Moulin Riche.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
