Wine Spectator | Rating: 92

Ripe, generous and distinctive for the herbal, soapy grace notes swirling around the rich black cherry and mineral flavors, echoing enticingly on the open-grained finish.

($55; a selection of fruit from Coccinelle Vineyard, vinified with a portion of its stems; 14.5% alcohol) Saturated full ruby. Blackberry, flint, pepper, spice and violet on the perfumed nose; has the rawness of young Northern Rhone syrah. Dense and spicy in the mouth, with superb flavor intensity and good verve. At once broad and focused, and far fresher than a syrah with a pH of 4.1 has any right to be. The firm tannins (and the inclusion of some stems) provide structural support. Finishes long and ripe, with a suggestion of roasted nuts. The most promising syrah I've tasted to date from Washington, in the style of an Hermitage.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
