This is really seductive on the nose, with Indian spices, blackberries, plums and cedar. Turns to flowers. Full-bodied, with layers of gorgeous ripe tannins and loads of ripe fruit. Yet goes on and on. Wonderful balance. This is better than the 1997.

The 2000 Barolo La Serra is just starting to show early hints of tertiary complexity. Sweet herbs, tobacco, licorice and worn-in leather add considerable complexity to a core of powerful dark fruit. The La Serra possesses remarkable depth and nuance, with initial Syrah-like notes that melt into an endless, layered Barolo of exceptional elegance. This is a great La Serra. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025.

($220) Medium red. Roasted redcurrant and tobacco on the nose, with a suggestion of dried fruits that reminded me of a Bonneau Chateauneuf du Pape. Then fat, rich and chewy, though not especially sweet in the middle. Liqueur-like redcurrant syrup flavor complicated by minerals, leather and animal fur. Finishes with big, drying tannins. This is Voerzio's highest-altitude cru and a wine that's usually perfumed in the early going, but today this is my least favorite 2000 here. (There will be no La Serra in the hot year of 2003, and in the hail year of 2002, Voerzio didn't even bother to harvest these vines.)

About This Producer

For years considered an oddity in Piedmont, Roberto Voerzio has proven to the naysayers and detractors that his techniques, a consummate melding of old and new elevage methods, do work and produce wines of unquestionable concentration and harmonious balance. He is almost fanatical in his insistence upon extraordinarily low yields; high density plantings and 2-4 clusters of grapes per vine are the norm. The cellar regimen is tailored to each vineyard's production, not over-regulating fermentations and employing a precise melange of new and used oak to achieve the overall "perfect" package. The wines are deceptive in that they are luscious and approachable, replete with ripe fruit and floral notes, but a hidden spine of structure and massive underlying tannins create an absolutely stunning Nebbiolo experience. These are rare wines that consistently rank among the best the Piedmont offers, and Voerzio is a true Nebbiolo legend.

Wine Varietal: Nebbiolo

Big, dark, and bold, Nebbiolo is a robust variety with heavy tannins and a sometimes bitter profile. While areas outside Italy (Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, California, and South Africa) have begun cultivating Nebbiolo, the Italian region of Piedmont is where it reaches its greatest height. It is here, the historic home to Nebbiolo, where the finest Barolos and Barbarescos are produced. Many winemakers have compared this grape to Pinot Noir for its difficult growing habits and unpredictable cellar and aging behavior. Typical descriptors for Nebbiolo include roses, violets, tar, wild herbs, cherries, raspberries, truffles, and tobacco.
