Boy, this is beautiful to smell! Fresh-picked strawberries and cherries, with just the right amount of cloves. Hints of prunes. Full-bodied, with soft and round tannins and a long fresh-fruit finish. Goes on and on. Hard not to drink this. This is a blend taken from various sites in the Barolo and Monforte d'Alba areas. 1,400 cases made.

The 2000 Barolo Le Vigne is made from parcels across multiple vineyards, which is always an advantage in challenging vintages. The 2000 Le Vigne is fresher and more delineated than the Cannubi Boschis, although it lacks that wine's sheer pedigree. Pretty floral notes are woven into a textured fabric of red fruit and spices. There is just enough freshness for this to continue to drink well for a handful of years. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2018.

($120) Medium red. Perfumed, expansive nose offers subtle red fruits, licorice, menthol and spices. Lush, sweet, full and mellow, with a dominant flavor of strawberry. Rich and seamless in the style of the vintage's best examples, without loss of definition or freshness. Finishes suave and sweet, with very fine tannins and lovely persistence.

Wonderful, opened up well and drank very nicely. Not the best Barolo I've ever had but certainly a good wine with all the characteristics I like in Barolo, if slightly muted.

Still very tight. Needs 5 more years to come in. Should be great when it does.

About This Producer

Long esteemed as a leading producer of the Piedmont, Luciano Sandrone is sometimes mislabeled a "modernizer" of the of the region. In truth, he is more of a relaxer of the mediums that make the wines here long-lived, but difficult to get around in their youth. The wines combine the lovely floral and leather/spice aromatics typical of Barolo with balanced red and dark fruit that is liberally dosed with appealing high-toned acidity.

Wine Varietal: Nebbiolo

Big, dark, and bold, Nebbiolo is a robust variety with heavy tannins and a sometimes bitter profile. While areas outside Italy (Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, California, and South Africa) have begun cultivating Nebbiolo, the Italian region of Piedmont is where it reaches its greatest height. It is here, the historic home to Nebbiolo, where the finest Barolos and Barbarescos are produced. Many winemakers have compared this grape to Pinot Noir for its difficult growing habits and unpredictable cellar and aging behavior. Typical descriptors for Nebbiolo include roses, violets, tar, wild herbs, cherries, raspberries, truffles, and tobacco.
