Solid and superfruity. Ultraclean, with blackberries, raspberries and licorice character. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long finish. Focused and silky. Very refined indeed. One of the best Cannubis ever from here. 900 cases made.

($135) Saturated deep red. Less expressive on the nose than Le Vigne, hinting at blackberry, flowers and smoky oak. Suave on entry, then quite closed in the middle palate; less obviously lush and sweet than Le Vigne but more gripping. Then very strong on the back end, building impressively and demonstrating a serious tannic structure that transcends the vintage. Built to age. The 2000 Barolo Cannubi Boschis shows early signs of maturity in its autumn leaves, leather and spices. There is an attractive silkiness to the fruit, but ultimately the 2000 comes across as a bit two-dimensional, especially in context with some of the truly great vintages. The wine does freshen up a touch in the glass, not enough to make a material difference. Ideally the 2000 is best enjoyed over the next few years.

Sexy nose reminiscent of dark fruit compote, oak and dried roses. Fat plump fruit on the palate with mild tannins. Drink this luscious wine now while you wait for the 01's to come around.

About This Producer

Long esteemed as a leading producer of the Piedmont, Luciano Sandrone is sometimes mislabeled a "modernizer" of the of the region. In truth, he is more of a relaxer of the mediums that make the wines here long-lived, but difficult to get around in their youth. The wines combine the lovely floral and leather/spice aromatics typical of Barolo with balanced red and dark fruit that is liberally dosed with appealing high-toned acidity.

Wine Varietal: Nebbiolo

Big, dark, and bold, Nebbiolo is a robust variety with heavy tannins and a sometimes bitter profile. While areas outside Italy (Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, California, and South Africa) have begun cultivating Nebbiolo, the Italian region of Piedmont is where it reaches its greatest height. It is here, the historic home to Nebbiolo, where the finest Barolos and Barbarescos are produced. Many winemakers have compared this grape to Pinot Noir for its difficult growing habits and unpredictable cellar and aging behavior. Typical descriptors for Nebbiolo include roses, violets, tar, wild herbs, cherries, raspberries, truffles, and tobacco.
