($200) Bright gold. Deep, subtly smoky nectarine and musky yellow plum aromas are energized by a suave mineral quality. Broad and fleshy, with deep, chewy pear, pit fruit and buttered toast flavors. A serious style, with velvety texture and excellent finishing punch. This has the concentration to repay cellaring but is open-knit enough to enjoy on the young side. This goes for personality and finesse. An assertive, honeyed style, with plenty of citrus flavors. Mature coffee and roasted nut accents are peeking through, with a robust structure and a dried citrus aftertaste. 32,000 cases imported.

This is only the sketchiest of notes as I tasted this wine quite separately from the wines below, in a much less propitious glass. It seemed very very youthful and not especially structured. Obviously  far too young to drink though I fear that won’t stop most Cristal drinkers popping the cork.

Seductively mellow and replete with honey toffee as always, and wrapped around with silkiness. The fantastic thing is that the fruitiness is very young and bursting with energy, with tones of spring flowers, gooseberries and red currants along with sweet pineapple, paw-paw and mango. Phenomenally "Cristally" and delightfully sensual. That was how differently I apprehended this wine on that first occasion. Now it is already in the same lacklustre phase as 2000 Dom Pérignon.

About This Producer

Located just south of Reims, Louis Roederer is one of the largest remaining independent Champagne houses in France. It has been owned by the Rouzaud family since it was founded in 1776, and is most famous for producing the premium champagne Cristal. Tsar Nicholas II nominated Louis Roederer as the official wine supplier to the Imperial Court of Russia, and thus it became known as the "Champagne of the Tsars," or "Champagne of the Stars." Today, Roederer continues the tradition of producing fabulous champagne using century old methods yielding spectacular results.

Wine Varietal: Champagne Blend

Three major varieties are used in a Champagne Blend: Chardonnay, which provides a smooth, creamy texture and Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, which provide depth and backbone. Most Champagne is non-vintage (NV), produced with grapes from several different vintages. Vintage Champagnes are made in exceptional years and must contain 80% grapes from that year. Champagne, France is the only region permitted to put "Champagne" on the label.

Blanc de Blancs: Meaning "white of white," blanc de blancs Champagne is 100% Chardonnay.

Blanc de Noirs: Meaning "white of red," is 100% Pinot Noir or a Pinot Noir/Pinot Meunier blend.

Rose Champagne: A small amount of still red wine is added during the blending process, creating a rose hue.
