($149) Good medium ruby. Sappy, very pure aromas of smoky raspberry, cherry and minerals. Sweet and wild in the mouth, with perfumed fruit of great class. This has a creaminess of texture that the Mazis and Griottes can't match. Finishes with very sweet, fine tannins that are perfectly supported by fresh, aromatic red fruits. I never would have guessed this was aged in about 70% new oak.

The Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes 2000 from Roty is a great wine considering the vintage. It has superb transparency on the nose with red cherries, strawberry pastilles and bacon fat, those limestone scents permeating through. The palate is very fine with crisp, slightly obdurate tannin. There is perhaps just a hint of brettanomyces in this wine, but it does not oppress the fruit, and there is an endearing harmonious finish that gains complexity with aeration. Give this a couple of hours in the decanter.

The Charmes is even more expressive with ultra ripe, roasted fruit and sweet, rich, warm, slightly alcoholic flavors that offer dazzling complexity and power. This seduces on the front end and then delivers a tidal wave of a finish. There isn't much nuance yet but I suspect this will develop plenty of complexity as it ages. To be sure, it is bigger, richer and sappier than the Griotte but I marginally prefer the precision and balance of the latter wine in this vintage.

Tasted in 2008. This is a flat out great example of a superb Charmes. All of the gorgeous red pinot fruits with the super underlying Burgundy terrior and finesce of a great winemaker. It's amazing how a great producer can take Charmes and really "Charm" it. Try next in 2010

Hello: bright ripe red fruit on the nose. Roasted sweet cherry flavors coat the palate. Long, long finish. This is flat out delicious.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
