Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 93

Enormously complex, rich and silky, with tiers of juicy currant, blackberry, mocha and anise, also pretty, cedary oak, yet for all its flavor and depth, it's a remarkably elegant and refined red.

lot of finnesse, medium to full body, red ruby in palate. Rich aromas of red fruits, berries, currant and floral. Is in delicious stage and tannins are suave but long.Very round with no hard corners.... enjoy this beauty within next 3-4 yrs.

About This Producer

Hartwell's Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc vines are ideally situated in the Stags Leap District of Napa, on the steep slope of a dormant volcano. They enjoy all the factors for winegrowing success: warm days, cool nights, good drainage, low yields, and the only granite in Stags Leap. Winemakers Benoit Touquette, trained at the University of Bordeaux, and Andy Erickson, trained at UC Davis, team up with consulting winemaker Michel Rolland to produce single varietal bottlings of distinction.

Wine Varietal: Merlot

Merlot shares many of the same profile descriptors as Cabernet Sauvignon including plum, blackberry, chocolate and mocha. Bordeaux's Right Bank, such as in Pomerol and St.-Emilion, is the traditional home to this red grape, but it is grown all over the world. Merlot is either bottled on its own or is blended with other red grapes.
