Collector Reviews For This Wine

This wine is a new collaboration from Lisa Drinkward (wife of Les Behrens of Behrens and Hitchcock) and Francoise Peschon (winemaker at Araujo). Judging by the quality of this inaugural vintage, I can'twait to taste the 2001. Medium purple red color with a few thin slightly colored legs. Pleasant aromas of black cherry, black olives, and sweet cassis are nicely framed by toasty smoky oak, (that is more than a little reminiscent of the oak used for Araujo). On the palate, the wine has plenty of smooth sweet fruit, graham crackers, and more of that Araujo-esque oak. The wine drinks exceedingly well at present, (three bottles gone in three days ? a virtual guarantee of a wine?s hedonistic quality) but will improve over the next four years and hold for a few more. A very enjoyable California Cabernet from an already maligned vintage ? I applaud the proprietors? intestinal fortitude in releasing the 2000 rather than waiting for the 2001. Buying this wine by the case is warranted.

About This Producer

Beginning with the 2000 vintage, Lisa Drinkward and Francoise Peschon, friends and mothers, began creating what was soon to become a major classic in the annals of Napa Valley startups. Both partners came in with excellent credentials - Drinkward, viticulturist at Behrens & Hitchcock (now known as Erna Schein), and Peschon, winemaker at Araujo (she recently transitioned to a consultant position there). Sourcing their fruit from small family-owned vineyards in Calistoga and producing no more than 500 cases, the pair dispels the myth that you need a sophisticated marketing plan and a fancy tasting room to compete in Napa Valley. If anything, their model is emulated more and more. Critics have been following it for a few years and there never seems to be enough to go around.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
