Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

($100-$123; the first year this wine was made by the Thienpont/Derenoncourt team) Good medium ruby. Very ripe, pure aromas of black fruits, truffle and harmonious oak. Juicy, sweet and aromatic in the mouth, with complex, concentrated dark fruit, tobacco and truffle flavors nicely sweetened but not overshadowed by sexy oak. Finishes fresh and sweet, with big but ripe tannins.

Site Blog: The Wine Forum Good not great, a little musky and bretty, the vintage probably saved it as the deep red fruits and prefect tannin push most if the funk out though it still lingers. #brettsucks #bouard #bellevue

A little flabby right out of the bottle, greatly improved with oxidation. Probably needs more time.

About This Producer

The vineyards of Chateau Bellevue are located around a hilltop of hard rock, on one of the slopes of Saint Emilion. At the hill's summit on the chalk plateau, the vineyards neighbor the Premier Grand Cru Classe estates of Beausejour-Becot and Beausejour Duffau-Lagarosse. The vineyards are also adjacent to those of Premier Grand Cru Classe estate Chateau Angelus at the base of the hill. At the top of the slope, the soil (of marine origin), is rich in magnesium and iron and it contains quite a high percentage of clay. Closer to the base of the hillside the soils are sandy with a little chalk and therefore more acidic. This diversity of soils and their variety of terroirs all contribute to the complexity and nobility of the wines produced by Chateau Bellevue.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
