Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 94

($90) Saturated purple- red. Pedigreed Barossa shiraz nose of rare intensity and opulence: heady, spicy cassis and raspberry fruit notes, tar and leather, given the full treatment of smoky vanillin, chocolatey oak. Remarkably smooth and silky for a wine of such concentration and weight. Explosive and exceptionally long on the finish, with flavors of cassis, dark cherry, molasses and plum. At once voluptuous and refined; a wine with great balance and potential.

Deep garnet in color, the 1999 The Factor shows an earthy, meaty and gamey nose that is a little musky. Full-bodied and rich, it has medium levels of velvety tannins that hold up the concentrated and long, spicy finish. It is mature now and ready to drink.

Wine Spectator | Rating: 92

A beautifully layered wine, rich in texture, with lots of exotic spice notes weaving through the meaty cherry and berry fruit, all of which linger effortlessly on the firm finish. 220 cases imported.

About This Producer

Torbreck Vintners was founded by David Powell in 1994. Although located in Australia's Barossa Valley, the name comes from a forest in Scotland where Powell previously worked as a lumberjack before becoming a winemaker. Torbreck's production is centered around the classic Barossa Valley varieties of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro (Mourvedre), and the winemaking philosophy is based on David's love for the wines of France's Rhone Valley. Along with many intensely flavored red wines blended from old-vine Shiraz and Grenache, Torbreck also produces white wines from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
