Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93(+?)

($65) Deep red. Ineffable, deep aromas of wild strawberry, blackberry, espresso, underbrush and sweet oak. Densely packed and sweet, with strong minerality contributing to the impression of extract. A big, mouthfilling wine that's rich and broad but also quite vibrant. Finishes impressively long and bright, with horizontal, very fine tannins. (Marc de Grazia; importers include Michael Skurnik Wines, Syosset, NY; Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; and Estate Wines Ltd. , San Rafael, CA)

Quite mature-looking ruby, but healthy. Dense, exciting, and clean. Very lively and racy. Correct and healthy.

Wine Advocate | Rating: 91

The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino is a big wine, but with the shapeliness which always characterizes this producer's wines. The ripe and ample notes of red fruit, leather, liquorice, and game are followed by the classic smoothness and melting tannins of Sassetti wines, continuous and caressing and with a rise in the intensity and sense of solidity on the finish. Deceptively ready, it will easily last another dozen years.

Rich, with complex aromas of very ripe plum, flowers and raspberry. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a lovely, succulent fruit finish. Balanced and delicious.

About This Producer

One of the greatest of all Brunelli hails from the tiny Pertimali estate, nestled on a slope in the prime Montosoli cru to the northeast of Montalcino, where the Sassetti family has produced wine and olive oil for more than a century. The Montosoli hill is historically reputed for wines that are a perfect balance of the power of southern Montalcino with the finesse of the north. Where most producers own properties in both zones and blend to achieve that balance, in Montosoli, nature does all of the work. In the vineyard and in the cellar, father Livio and his two sons combine the best of both innovation and tradition, taking advantage of modern equipment and winemaking but also observing natural phenomena such as the phases of the moon. The result is wines with rich, deep, and often exotically perfumed fruit, more akin to the style of Burgundy. In addition to Brunello and Rosso, Pertimali also produces the lush Super-Tuscan "Vigna Fili di Seta," a barrique-aged blend of 60% Sangiovese and 40% Cabernet. Beginning with the 1997 Brunello di Montalcino, the label now emphasizes the proprietor's name, Livio Sassetti, rather than the estate name, Pertimali.
