A monumental wine, bold, rich, smooth and concentrated, with layers of ripe black cherry, currant, plum, anise and blackberry. A mix of ultraripe fruit with a measure of elegance and finesse, its tannins are supple and seamless. 2,200 cases made.

Good saturated ruby-red. Superripe aromas of currant, tobacco, coffee, chocolate and maple syrup. Sweet, lush and suave, with a floral aspect; showing the vibrant, juicy quality of the vintage's better examples. Really spreads out to coat the palate. Finishes with big, sweet, broad tannins and a mineral note.

A vintage I was never as fond of as many of my colleagues, the 1999 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select certainly proved that they may have been more correct. Certainly not one of the all-time Shafer Hillsides, but nevertheless, a youthful, tannic, firm, structured wine, with more intellectual than hedonistic appeal at age 16, this wine has a dense purple color to the rim, notes of licorice, tobacco leaf, blackcurrants, followed by relatively high acids for a Hillside Select (or at least they present themselves that way) with some rather massive tannin. This is a big, medium to full-bodied wine with a Bordeaux-like structure imposed on it. It's still moving in the right direction, and should hit its peak in another 4-5 years and then last for 15-20.

Shafer's flagship wine is still a baby. The nose is extremely ripe with suggestions of prunes in armagnac. The whole is very robust and the tannins crowd in on the back palate at this stage. Lots of terroir influence and not too much pandering to current winemaking fashion for smoothing out every wrinkle - so much the better. This is a BIG wine but it's well made and should turn into a lovely adolescent.

Tasted with 1997 to 2008 vintages. Deep ruby with an intense black fruit nose. Took awhile to open up. Great balance and over whelming on the palate.

Had before dinner, not with food. Beautiful nose but too much grape and not a strong finish as I expect from Shafer HSS. Although it got better with time (2 hours) it just really put a wow on me at all. Disappointing in relation to what I expect from Shafer.

About This Producer

John Shafer began working and replanting steep, rocky vineyards in Napa Valley's Stags Leap District in 1972, and has since built Shafer into one of the most sought-after labels from Napa. John, his son Doug, and winemaker Elias Fernandez call themselves farmers, and are proud of it. Doug took over the vineyards in 1989, and within a year began to integrate organic techniques into his vineyards while the term "organic" still elicited sideways looks. "My soils were getting tired," Doug says. "They had been farmed since 1922." He installed solar panels in 2004, and now enjoys watching his batteries send power back to the grid. Elias was hired by Shafer in 1984 and named winemaker in 1994. Shafer Hillside Select is a benchmark wine of the Stag's Leap District, with a string of awards too long to list. Aged a full four years prior to release, it is, in the words of Robert Parker, "One of the world's, as well as Napa's, most profound Cabernet Sauvignons."

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
